What to expect from iOS 12

June 12, 2018

We take a look at what iOS 12 will have to offer when it is likely to be released to new phones in September.  There will probably be three versions, one for developers, one for public beta testers and a final version for everyone else.

The new release will focus on reliability and performance and support the same iPhones and iPads that iOS 11 works with.

It boasts great performance enhancements and exciting new functionality.

Here’s the overview of what's to come:

Augmented reality
With ARKit 2, multiple users can simultaneously participate in AR to work on projects, play multiplayer games, and share other AR experiences from different iOS devices. You’ll see 3D objects and scenes, including animations, with Quick Look in iOS apps like Mail, Messages, and Safari. And with the new Measure app, you can use an AR view of the world to measure the size of objects.

Messages
Memoji are a new form of Animoji, and make communicating with friends and family even more fun on iPhone X. You can personalize your Memoji in Messages, and add Animoji, filters, text, and stickers to photos and videos with new camera effects for Messages and FaceTime.

FaceTime
With Group FaceTime, you can chat with up to 32 people simultaneously. And new participants can join at any time.

Screen Time
Activity reports show app and website use, how many notifications you receive, and how often you pick up your device. So you get more insight into how you spend your time, and parents can find the right balance for the family.

Do Not Disturb
Bedtime mode dims the display and hides notifications on the Lock screen until prompted in the morning. And you’ll find options in Control Center to set automatic end times based on time, location, or an action. So you can get a better night’s sleep.

Notifications
More options to control how notifications are delivered mean fewer interruptions. And you can instantly edit and manage settings to receive only the notifications you want, and view and act on grouped notifications all at once.

Photos
An all-new For You tab includes Memories, iCloud Shared Albums, and new features that make it easier to rediscover photos and share them with friends. A new Sharing Suggestions feature makes it easier to view photos and share them with friends by intelligently surfacing photos and albums to share with the people who were part of a trip or an event. They can choose to easily share back photos and videos from the same event. And search suggestions and combined searches make it even easier to find what you’re looking for.

Siri Shortcuts
Siri Shortcuts enable any app to work with Siri, so you can get things done faster. You can customize Shortcuts by creating a simple voice command to kick off a task, or use the new Shortcuts app to carry out a series of actions from different apps with just a tap or voice command.

Privacy
Safari now has even stronger protection against cross-site tracking by requiring your permission to share data with sites that feature “Like” buttons, commenting widgets, and embedded videos. And using passwords is even more secure with automatic strong password suggestions for apps and websites.

Apple Books
It’s even easier to discover and enjoy books and audiobooks, and the Book Store tab makes it simple to check out new titles and browse top charts, curated collections, and special offers.

News
Discover new channels and topics, or jump straight to favorites in the redesigned News app. And on iPad, a new sidebar makes navigation even easier.

Stocks
Stocks is now available on iPad, so you can find out how the market is moving with easy-to-understand quotes and high-quality news and headlines from Apple News.

Voice Memos
Now you can use Voice Memos on iPad. And with iCloud support, your recordings and edits sync across devices.

Other enhancements
Third-party navigation apps are now fully integrated into CarPlay. SMS one-time passcodes will appear automatically as AutoFill suggestions. Wallet supports contactless student ID cards, so you can use your iPhone all over campus. And the battery usage chart in Settings now shows your usage for the last 24 hours or 10 days.
