Microsoft Authenticator no longer supported for Apple Watch

January 30, 2023

microsoft-authenticator-and-apple-watch.jpgFollowing a release in this month (January 2023), the Microsoft Authenticator app will no longer be supported by the Apple Watch. Microsoft states that this is due to Apple's WatchOS being incompatible with its new security features.

Don’t panic though, the app will still work on mobile phones including the iPhone and Android. Although this will be a little inconvenient for some, it’s not the end of the world. It does however show the continued tension between the two tech giants.

What is Microsoft Authenticator and how will this affect me?

The Microsoft Authenticator app is solely used for the secure sign-in to Microsoft accounts by generating one-time login codes as part of a two-step verification process (essentially the same as the function of the Google Authenticator app). The Apple Watch companion app was launched in 2018 and provided extra convenience to its users by allowing them to use their watch over having to pick up their phone. Ultimately, this change simply means that you will have to use your mobile phone for two-step verification - again, inconvenient for some but not a game changer.

Why have Microsoft stopped supporting Authenticator for WatchOS?

There aren’t a lot of details out there, but Microsoft appears to be putting this down to WatchOS “being incompatible with Authenticator security features”. On Microsoft's official Authenticator FAQ page regarding Apple Watch support, it states:

“In the upcoming Authenticator release in January 2023 for iOS, there will be no companion app for watchOS due to it being incompatible with Authenticator security features. This means you won't be able to install or use Authenticator on Apple Watch. We therefore recommend that you delete Authenticator from your Apple Watch. This change only impacts Apple Watch, so you will still be able to use Authenticator on your other devices.”

So how can I use Microsoft Authenticator on my Apple devices?

Many people who would usually be immersed in the Apple ecosystem may think “why do I care, I only use Apple”. However a vast number of these individuals are bound to use the Microsoft 365 environment for their schooling or at work. Not to worry though, the Authenticator app will still be supported by iPhones and iPads (in addition to Android devices if that's your cup of tea).
