The latest update to iPhones has given users an opportunity to communicate more easily, monitor their health better, and keep safer while travelling, along with many other benefits. There seems to be a focus on health, safety, and communication from Apple, though some of the features appear to work negatively against that goal, particularly for younger and vulnerable users.
The key points to note on the update are below, though there are a host of other smaller updates to features and apps listed on the Apple website which you can read here.
Nudity & Sensitive Content Detection
New nudity and sensitive image detection can be used in messages, AirDrop, contact posters, Facetime messages and even third-party apps. Upon detection of a possibly sensitive or nude image, your iPhone will block the image, requiring the press of a button to be shown. A communication warning system is also in place for all the above, which shows a warning message and some information about nude content that particularly teenagers may be unaware of, such as the possibility of an image being shared or accessed by someone other than the intended recipient.
NameDrop
You may have heard about this one, and the controversy surrounding it already. Many view this time-saver update as a possible security risk, though it’s not quite as scary as some are suggesting. While the feature does allow for instant contact sharing, it also requires use of faceID or a password to enable the transfer.
NameDrop allows your contact information to be transferred to another iPhone in close proximity via your own iPhone or Apple watch. A new facet of AirDrop which works the same way, by bringing both phones (or a watch) together. This update allows users to play games, transfer photos, or watch a movie together as well. This feature can be disabled through settings.
Check In / Location Sharing in Messages
Locations can now be shared in real-time, allowing for more accurate and safer travel. The Check-in feature, which tells your designated person that you have arrived safely at a location, will now alert them if your travel has stopped short of your destination. It will also show your battery level, location and signal to help you decide if they need your help. This is a great feature for older teens who may be venturing out alone - allowing you to help them stay safe without limiting their valued freedom.
Screen Distance
Another Health app benefit, though settings can be altered through the Family and Screen Time tools. The front camera is now able to accurately measure distance from a user’s face, which in turn will trigger a warning to move away when too close (within 12 inches). This has been automatically added for all child and teen users of iPhones, but can be enabled by and for adults as well. Extended close proximity to screens is a leading cause of eye problems for children; this feature is a great way to support their eye health easily.
Password Sharing
Passwords can now be shared between family members, for easier and simpler access to shared accounts. A great way to ensure children don’t lose or forget passwords, or for parents to ensure access to children’s accounts. Passwords are safely kept in the Passwords app as always, but can be added and edited by all.
Mood Tracking in the Health App
The Health app, which already tracks menstrual cycles, sleep, steps, and more, can now help you track your moods and feelings. It also allows for tracking mood triggers to help you understand your mood patterns, which can be really helpful in working out what is causing stress or in deciding to look for support. The added anxiety and depression questionnaires may also be helpful for this, though would not replace speaking with a trained professional. Particularly great for teens who are starting their journey into adulthood, this feature can support emotional well-being and support them to take ownership of their mental health.
