iOS 12 - Here's what is new

iOS 12 main.webpApple's release of iOS 12 this week, brings great performance improvements and brilliant new features for iPhone and iPad, making them faster and more responsive for things users do every day. 

Here's what is new:

Messages
Memoji are a new form of Animoji on iPhone X or later, so you can personalise your Memoji in Messages, and add Animoji, filters, text, and stickers to photos and videos with new camera effects for messages and Facetime.

Screen time
You can view your app and website usage, how many notifications you receive, and how often you pick up your device on the Activity reports.
Go to Settings > Battery to get a better insight into how your spend your time. 

Facetime
With Group Facetime, you can chat with up to 32 people simultaneously. And new participants can join at any time. (coming later this year)

Do not disturb
Get a a better night’s sleep with Bedtime mode. It dims the display and hides notifications on the Lock screen until prompted in the morning. You can also set up automatic end times based on time, location, or an action in the Control Center.

Keyboard trackpad
You can now turn the Apple keyboard into a trackpad simply by holding the space bar. 

Notifications
More options to control how notifications are delivered means fewer interruptions, and you can instantly edit and manage settings to receive only the notifications you want, and view and act on grouped notifications all at once.

Photos
An all-new 'For You tab' includes Memories, iCloud Shared Albums, and new features that make it easier to rediscover photos and share them with friends, by intelligently surfacing photos and albums to share with the people who were part of a trip or an event. They can choose to easily share back photos and videos from the same event, whilst search suggestions and combined searches make it even easier to find what you’re looking for.

Siri Shortcuts
Siri Shortcuts enable any app to work with Siri, so you can get things done faster. You can customise Shortcuts by creating a simple voice command to start a task, or use the new Shortcuts app to carry out a series of actions from different apps, with just a tap or voice command. 

Siri voices
You can now set Siri as an Irish or South African male or female voice. Go to Settings > Siri & Search > Siri voice. 


3D Touch shortcuts 

  • Hard press the camera icon and you go straight to the QR reader  
  • Hard press the note icon and go straight to the scanner 

Face ID
Face ID can now support two faces, so that you can allow someone else access.  Go to Settings > Face ID > Passcode > Set up alternative appearance. 

Privacy
Safari now has even stronger protection against cross-site tracking by requiring your permission to share data with sites that feature “Like” buttons, commenting widgets, and embedded videos. Whilst using passwords is even more secure with automatic strong password suggestions for apps and websites.

Augmented Reality
With ARKit 2, multiple users can simultaneously participate in AR to work on projects, play multiplayer games, and share other AR experiences from different iOS devices. You’ll see 3D objects and scenes, including animations, with Quick Look in iOS apps like Mail, Messages, and Safari.

Measure App
The new Measure app, with AR view of the world, enables you to measure objects with just your phone and check if things are straight using the new spirit level.

Apple books
Discover and enjoy books and audiobooks. The Book Store tab makes it simple to check out new titles and browse top charts, curated collections, and special offers.

News
Discover new channels and topics, or jump straight to favorites in the redesigned News app. On iPad, a new sidebar makes navigation even easier.

Stocks
Stocks is now available on iPad, so you can find out how the market is moving with easy-to-understand quotes and high-quality news and headlines from Apple News.

Voice memos
Now you can use Voice Memos on iPad, and with iCloud support your recordings and edits sync across devices.

Live listen
You can transform your AirPods into hearing aids, magnifying people's voices. Go to Settings > Control Centre > Customise and select 'hearing'.

Additional enhancements 

  • Third-party navigation apps are now fully integrated into CarPlay.  
  • SMS one-time passcodes will appear automatically as AutoFill suggestions.  
  • Wallet supports contactless student ID cards.  
  • Taking accidental screenshots can no longer happen, as the display now has to be turned on to activate the power and volume up button combination.  
  • Greater choice of pen colours to mark up screenshots.  
  • Trim audio memos.
