Dual SIM support on iOS 12.1

November 15, 2018

Dual SIM support on iPhone Xs, iPhone Xs Max, and iPhone Xr is now available on devices running iOS 12.1.

This means you can activate an additional cellular plan from a carrier using the eSIM in the newest iPhone models.

With Dual SIM, you can have two separate numbers, like business and personal, or add a local number or data plan when you travel, all in a single iPhone.

Dual SIM is enabled with both a nano-SIM and an eSIM—a digital SIM that allows you to activate a cellular plan from an eligible carrier without using a physical nano-SIM.

It’s easy to set up your two lines with setup assistant, and iOS 12 labels your two numbers throughout, so they’re easy to identify and manage.

What you need:

  • A carrier service plan from a carrier that supports eSIM on iPhone, and either a QR code or your carrier’s iPhone app to activate your second carrier plan on your phone (Some carriers will allow you to move your existing plan from your nano-SIM to an eSIM. Contact your carrier for help).
  • iPhone Xs, iPhone Xs Max, and iPhone Xr.
  • iOS 12.1.
  • To use the eSIM with a different carrier than the nano-SIM, your iPhone must be unlocked. Otherwise, both plans must be from the same carrier.

To activate with a QR code:

  • When you set up a cellular plan, your carrier will provide a QR code to scan with your phone. Tap Settings > Cellular > Add Cellular Plan, then scan the code.
  • Next, the setup assistant will automatically guide you through a few simple steps to label your phone numbers, choose your default number for voice calls, and designate a number for data.

To activate with a carrier app:

  • Go to the App Store and download your carrier’s iPhone app. Then use the app to purchase and activate a cellular plan.
  • Next, the setup assistant will automatically guide you through a few simple steps to label your phone numbers, choose your default number for voice calls, and designate a number for data.

Switching eSIMs
You can store more than one eSIM in your iPhone, but you can use only one at a time. Switch eSIMs by tapping Settings > Cellular > Cellular Plans and selecting the plan you want to use. Then tap Turn On This Line.

Apple Watch + Dual SIM

  • You can add one or both plans to your Apple Watch Series 4 (GPS + Cellular) or Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + Cellular). To choose which plan your watch uses when it connects to cellular networks, tap the Watch app, then tap Cellular.
  • When you’re away from your phone and your watch is connected to your chosen cellular line, you can make and receive voice calls on that line. And you can send and receive data, including messages, from both active cellular lines.
